The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is undergoing a significant upgrade aimed at boosting its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) to 700,000 bpd, the company has announced.
The enhancement, which involves key modifications to existing infrastructure, is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.
During a media tour of the facility in Lekki, Lagos, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, revealed that while the refinery may not hit full capacity this year, ongoing improvements would bolster its operational efficiency.
βOur Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) unit is currently operating at 85 percent. Weβre not at full capacity because of the modifications underway. But by year-end, we expect to reach 700,000 bpd. Some departments are even exceeding expectationsβsome are running at 145 percent,β Dangote stated.
The RFCC is a core component of the refineryβs system, used to convert heavy feedstocks into lighter, more valuable products such as gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas.
Dangote also disclosed that the company purchased 10 million barrels of crude oil in July 2025, with 55 percent of the supply sourced from the United States, underscoring the refineryβs global crude sourcing strategy.
With this upgrade, the Dangote Refinery remains on course to reinforce Nigeriaβs self-sufficiency in petroleum refining and reduce the countryβs dependence on fuel imports.
