Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to restrict landlords and landladies from demanding more than three months’ rent in advance if elected president.

Sowore made the declaration in a post shared via his X account following his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.

According to him, one of his first actions in office would be signing an Executive Order aimed at ending what he described as the exploitation of tenants across Nigeria.

“No landlord or landlady shall have the freedom to demand more than 3 months’ rent at a time. On my very first day in office, I will sign an Executive Order ending the exploitation of tenants across Nigeria,” he stated.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns over rising housing costs and complaints from tenants across major cities about multiple-year rent demands.

Sowore’s comments have since generated discussions among Nigerians, with supporters describing the proposal as tenant-friendly, while critics question how such a policy would be implemented within existing housing and property laws.

Further details regarding how the proposed policy would operate have not yet been released.
