Edo 16 Travelers Massacre: Northern CAN Blows Hot, Preaches Justice, National Unity

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has condemned the brutal murder of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, calling it a tragic reminder of Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN described the attack as an affront to the nation’s collective humanity and urged authorities to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“The pain and anguish their families and loved ones must endure are unimaginable. We extend our deepest condolences and pray for divine comfort for all affected,” the statement read.

Beyond mourning the victims, the association cautioned against reprisals that could further destabilize the country. “Retaliation will only perpetuate the cycle of violence, causing more suffering to innocent citizens,” CAN warned, urging Nigerians to seek peace instead of revenge.

Northern CAN also demanded concrete action from security agencies and governments at all levels, stressing that such heinous crimes must not be allowed to fester. “We urge the Edo State Government and the Federal Government to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served swiftly. This is not just about condemning the act but ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated,” the statement emphasized.

The attack has once again underscored the urgent need for strengthened security measures, particularly on Nigeria’s highways, which have become hotspots for kidnappings and bandit attacks. While security forces continue to combat these threats, incidents like the Uromi killings highlight the gaps that still exist in safeguarding citizens’ lives

For the bereaved families and all Nigerians, the demand for justice and lasting security remains urgent. The government’s response to this tragedy will be a litmus test of its commitment to ensuring safety for all citizens.
