The Rivers State Government has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), demanding the immediate return of N300 million paid to the association and threatening legal action if the funds are not refunded.
In an official statement released by Hector Igbikiowubo, the Senior Special Assistant for Media to the Rivers State Government, the administration refuted NBA’s claims that the money was a gift and not linked to any hosting agreement.
According to the state government, the N300 million was allocated specifically to support the hosting of the NBA’s 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) in Rivers State.
“The government outrightly rejects the NBA’s recent allegation that the ₦300 million payment was a ‘gift’, unrelated to hosting rights for the NBA AGC 2025,” Igbikiowubo stated.
He emphasized that the arrangement was entered into in good faith, with the expectation that hosting the prestigious legal event would bring economic benefits to the state and its residents.
The Rivers State Government accused the NBA of unilaterally relocating the 2025 conference despite the financial commitment already made, labeling the move as unethical and a breach of trust.
“The NBA’s decision to relocate the AGC 2025 against our mutual understanding, while withholding the ₦300 million, is a violation of that agreement,” the statement added.
The government has now given the NBA an ultimatum to refund the sum or face legal proceedings aimed at recovering what it describes as “the property of the good people of Rivers State.”
Despite the fallout, the state reaffirmed its openness to working with professional bodies, including the NBA, but warned that it will not tolerate exploitation.
