A recent remark by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, labeling President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s worst leader on security has sparked strong backlash from political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri.
El-Rufai’s comment, reportedly made during a private interaction, criticized the current administration’s handling of national security and compared it unfavorably to the immediate past government of Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Omokri challenged the assertion, listing a series of major security failures under Buhari’s presidency.
“Nasir el-Rufai says President Tinubu is the worst Nigerian President in terms of security. Yet, he claimed Buhari was better,” Omokri wrote. “Please fact-check me.”
Omokri highlighted key incidents under Buhari, including:
The Kuje prison break (July 6, 2022), where 500 terrorists on motorcycles freed over 900 inmates.
The Nigerian Defence Academy attack (August 24, 2021), which left two officers dead.
The Kaduna Airport attack (March 26, 2022).
The Metele massacre (November 24, 2018), where over 80 soldiers were killed.
A wave of school abductions between 2018 and 2021, affecting hundreds of students in Dapchi, Kankara, Kagara, Zamfara, Afaka, and Greenfield University.
The Abuja-Kaduna train bombing (March 28, 2022), where passengers were killed and over 100 abducted.
Omokri also noted high-profile kidnappings under Buhari, including a former minister, a presidential in-law, and several local dignitaries.
In contrast, he praised the Tinubu administration’s record, citing:
A decline in Nigeria’s ranking on the Global Terrorism Index.
Ongoing road construction projects across 24 states, including Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, East-West Road, and others.
The reported neutralization of 16 notorious bandit leaders since 2023.
The elimination of key Boko Haram commanders during Ramadan in Borno State.
Omokri concluded his statement with a pointed question to Nigerians:
“So, Nigerians, I ask you: Who will you believe — the facts or Nasir El-Rufai?” Continue>
