The Federal Government has released N50 billion for the payment of earned allowances to academic and non-academic staff unions in federal universities across the country.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the Minister, the fund is part of the government’s renewed commitment to resolving longstanding disputes in the tertiary education sector and improving staff welfare.
“This administration is determined to ensure stability in the university system,” Dr. Alausa stated. “We have commenced the disbursement of N50 billion in earned allowances to both academic and non-academic unions. It’s a step forward in fulfilling our promises.”
The move is expected to ease tensions with major unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), who have repeatedly demanded payment of backlog entitlements.
Education stakeholders have lauded the gesture, describing it as a positive signal for the restoration of industrial harmony on campuses nationwide.
