135,000 People Living with HIV in Lagos – Commissioner of Health

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has revealed that approximately 135,000 residents of the state are currently living with HIV.

The disclosure was made during a recent health briefing aimed at highlighting the state government’s ongoing efforts to combat the spread of the virus. According to Prof. Abayomi, the figure is based on the latest epidemiological data and reflects both diagnosed and estimated undiagnosed cases.

He noted that while progress has been made in treatment and awareness, there is still a critical need for increased testing, education, and access to antiretroviral therapy. “Our goal is to ensure that every person living with HIV in Lagos has access to proper care and support,” he stated.

The Commissioner also stressed the importance of de-stigmatizing the disease, encouraging residents to get tested and know their status. He assured the public that the Lagos State Government remains committed to achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets aimed at ending the HIV epidemic.
