
Amid growing concerns about Nigeria slipping into a one-party state, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed the notion, insisting that the opposition’s current state is a result of its own internal disarray.
Speaking with reporters at the APC National Secretariat on Thursday, Sen. Basiru said:
“We cannot do the work of opposition for them. If they are collapsing, it is not our fault. We are focused on governance and building a strong nation.”
The comment comes on the heels of major defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, both of whom were formally welcomed into the APC earlier today.
Sen. Basiru emphasized that the APC’s expanding influence across states is a reflection of “trust in President Tinubu’s leadership and the party’s vision for Nigeria.”
Critics have expressed worry over the weakening of opposition structures, warning that it could undermine democratic balance. However, APC leaders insist that democracy allows free movement and realignment of political interests. Continue Your Reading>>
