Shehu Sani: “Social Media Is Not for Gentlemen — Both Government and Opposition Supporters Trade Insults”

Former Senator Shehu Sani has weighed in on the recent comments made by Peter Obi regarding the toxic nature of political discourse on social media, affirming that Obi’s claims are largely accurate but also highlighting a broader reality.

Sani stated that while young people are sometimes paid to insult others online, insults are not limited to one political side. According to him, young supporters of both the government and opposition engage in hostile online behavior.

“Social media is not for the faint-hearted. It’s not a street for gentlemen,” Sani remarked. “Social media and insults are like five and six. If you say what the government doesn’t like, you can be targeted; if you say what the opposition doesn’t like, you can be mobbed.”

The former lawmaker emphasized that Nigeria is currently grappling with a hostile environment that shows little tolerance for dissenting views or opposing opinions, both online and offline.
