Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of unlawfully arresting and detaining social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, in what he describes as a deliberate attempt to silence dissent.
According to Sowore, VDM’s arrest followed his public accusations against the EFCC and its leadership, alleging corruption and misconduct. He claims the agency is now scrambling to press charges in court, possibly as early as Friday, in an effort to retroactively justify its actions.
“The EFCC is currently exploring legal avenues to charge him in court, possibly tomorrow, in an attempt to legitimize their actions,” Sowore stated via his social media platform.
He emphasized that the EFCC has no jurisdiction to prosecute matters relating to criminal defamation, libel, or cybercrime, which are typically civil in nature.
“It is essential to state unequivocally that the EFCC does not possess the authority to prosecute individuals for criminal defamation, criminal libel, or cybercrime,” Sowore said. “As a result, the EFCC must release VDM immediately.” CONTINUE READING
