Tragedy in Uli as Soldier and Child Killed in Suspected Militia Attack

Tragedy struck Uli town in Anambra State on Friday evening, May 17, 2025, as gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), launched an attack that left a soldier and a child dead.

The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. at a local brothel known as “Uru Di Ya,” situated near Uli center in the Awka area. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, who arrived in two unidentified vehicles, opened fire indiscriminately.

A soldier stationed at the brothel was fatally shot, along with an unidentified young boy caught in the gunfire. A young woman also sustained injuries from stray bullets and is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, where she is reportedly in stable condition.

Security forces, including a joint police and vigilante team, responded promptly to the attack but were unable to apprehend the gunmen, who fled the scene before their arrival.

In a significant development, the soldier’s AK-47 rifle was recovered from the scene by a vigilante operative and handed over to the Army Captain in charge of local counterterrorism efforts.
