The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), through its National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), has successfully dismantled a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate specializing in the hijacking of WhatsApp accounts belonging to prominent Nigerians.
In a statement issued by the Force on Friday, the police disclosed that the operation followed a formal complaint filed on April 14, 2025. According to the NPF, cyber intelligence operatives swiftly launched an investigation that revealed a calculated scheme centered on mobile platform compromises and social engineering tactics.
Leveraging advanced digital forensic tools and high-level investigative techniques, the NPF traced illicit transactions across several Nigerian financial institutions. The operation led to the freezing of fraudulent funds amounting to several millions of naira.
A major breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of one Onajite Okoro in Warri, Delta State. Okoro reportedly confessed to working with a Facebook contact identified as “Chief Mallam Zaki.” He admitted to procuring SIM cards, linking them to various bank accounts, and coordinating the transfer of stolen funds. Devices and financial records recovered from Okoro provided further evidence of the criminal operation.
Police confirm that other members of the syndicate have been identified and remain at large, with efforts ongoing to apprehend all involved and ensure successful prosecution.
In response to the incident, the NPF urged the public to take proactive cybersecurity measures. “We advise Nigerians to activate multi-factor authentication, avoid clicking suspicious links, and always verify unusual messages—even from familiar contacts,” the statement read.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting Nigerians from digital threats.
