The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Charles Hammawa, has urged President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government to take firm and decisive action against those responsible for the recent mass killings in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Jalingo, the bishop decried the persistent violence in the region, expressing disappointment that despite multiple appeals and high-level visits, including the President’s recent condolence trip, the bloodshed has continued.
“It is disheartening that despite repeated appeals and visits by top government officials, the killings continue unabated. The people of Benue and the entire Middle Belt are not just statistics. They are fellow Nigerians deserving of protection, dignity, and peace,” Bishop Hammawa said.
While acknowledging President Tinubu’s gesture, the cleric stressed that condolences and promises must now give way to concrete, visible actions aimed at justice and peace.
“We appreciate the President’s visit, but condolences and promises, no matter how sincere, are not enough. What is urgently needed is visible, concrete action and a comprehensive strategy to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace in the affected communities,” he added.
The bishop offered prayers for the souls of the departed, healing for the wounded, and comfort for bereaved families, while affirming solidarity with the people of Benue in their time of grief.
