Tension has gripped residents of Wannune, headquarters of Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, following the brutal murder of Yayough Aondoakaa, a former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the LGA.
Aondoakaa was gunned down on Friday afternoon at the busy Wannune Market by suspected assassins, who arrived at the scene on motorcycles, eyewitnesses confirmed.
According to local sources, the attackers brazenly entered the market, asking for Aondoakaa’s location. Upon spotting him, they shot him at close range before fleeing the scene, sparking panic and chaos among traders and shoppers.
Residents say this is not the first attempt on Aondoakaa’s life. In a chilling turn of events last year, his wife was reportedly murdered in what was described as a botched assassination attempt targeting the former PDP official.
Security operatives have yet to release an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore calm in the area.
This killing adds to the growing wave of violence in Benue State, already grappling with security challenges ranging from herdsmen attacks to politically motivated killings.
