Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah is set to join Bayer Leverkusen in a deal reportedly worth £30 million, as former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag begins a new chapter in the Bundesliga.
The 22-year-old centre-back, who enjoyed a breakout 2023/24 campaign under Jürgen Klopp, made 33 appearances across all competitions and scored three goals — including the final goal of Klopp’s tenure. However, with the arrival of Arne Slot, Quansah saw reduced playing time, featuring significantly in only six matches during the 2024/25 season.
According to reports, Quansah has agreed personal terms with Leverkusen, who are undergoing a major squad reshaping following a season in which they finished second in the Bundesliga and narrowly missed out on a historic treble after losing to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final.
Leverkusen’s summer has already seen key departures, including Xabi Alonso, who left to manage Real Madrid, and Jonathan Tah, now with Bayern Munich. Additionally, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have joined Liverpool in a move that now appears to be paving the way for Quansah’s switch in the opposite direction.
Ten Hag, recently appointed as Alonso’s successor, is expected to build his defensive setup around youthful talent and sees Quansah as a long-term investment.
The Bundesliga has been a fertile ground for emerging stars, with the likes of Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Robert Lewandowski developing into world-class players within the league. Quansah now hopes to follow a similar path as he takes on this new challenge in Germany.
