Popular comedian and actor, Seyi Law, has weighed in on the ongoing Local Government Election in Lagos State, using his official X page to call out widespread political apathy and ignorance about grassroots governance.

In a pointed commentary, Seyi Law noted that many Lagos residents are unaware of the identities or manifestos of candidates vying for local government positions. He criticized the lack of political engagement, stating:

“Many here don’t even know those vying for office in their local government area. They didn’t come to campaign for their candidates, but tomorrow, they will accuse a party of manipulation.”

He further educated his audience on the importance of local government institutions, highlighting their constitutional responsibilities such as primary health care, primary school education, and local roads infrastructure. He lamented that citizens often direct anger at state and federal governments, ignoring the pivotal role of their local councils:

“The primary schools in Abuja where teachers are on strike are supposed to be resolved by the local government chairmen and not Wike, but they will abuse you if you say this.”

Seyi Law also recalled how President Bola Tinubu, as former Lagos State governor, fought for local governance by creating additional Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs)—an action that led to the withholding of state allocations under the Obasanjo administration, but eventually strengthened local governance and boosted state revenue.

Concluding his remarks, he reiterated his support for President Tinubu, calling his past actions “audacious” and “hope-inspiring.”

“That is the audacity that gives me hope, and that is why he is my candidate and president.”

The post has since drawn mixed reactions online, sparking discussions about civic responsibility, the relevance of local government structures, and broader political participation in Nigeria.
