Fire Razes Over 100 Shelters at Water Board IDP Camp in Monguno, Borno

A fire outbreak on Saturday, April 19, devastated the Water Board Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State, destroying over 100 makeshift shelters and leaving dozens of families without shelter.

According to eyewitness reports, the blaze started around 10:40 a.m. and quickly spread through the densely packed camp, consuming thatch and improvised structures, as well as household belongings, food supplies, and other essential items.

Firefighters, with the help of camp residents and humanitarian personnel, managed to bring the fire under control after several hours. Officials were also deployed to the scene to maintain order, prevent looting, and support emergency response efforts.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, authorities have begun investigations to determine the origin of the incident. The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and humanitarian organizations are currently working to assess the needs of displaced families and provide temporary relief.
