A group of former lawmakers elected on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) during the 7th National Assembly has distanced itself from Malam Nasir El-Rufai and former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, saying the duo lack the authority or credibility to speak on behalf of the CPC’s legacy.
Following a strategic meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, the group reaffirmed its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring their commitment to mobilize ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the briefing, Chairman of the Forum, Hon. Nasiru Baballe Ila, stated that only those who were elected on the CPC platform in 2011 could legitimately claim to represent the party’s ideals.
“We categorically declare that no person, group of persons, or entity has the authority to speak for or on behalf of the defunct CPC, except the elected representatives of the party who were duly chosen by its supporters in 2011,” Ila said.
The group also recognized Senator Tanko Al-Makura, the only CPC-elected governor, as the legitimate leader and symbol of the party’s history.
Describing El-Rufai and Malami as lacking “positive political significance,” the Forum stressed that neither played a decisive role during the CPC’s formative years.
“We are the true custodians of the party’s legacy and the representatives of the twelve million Nigerians, predominantly in Northern Nigeria, who entrusted us with their mandate,” Ila concluded.
Their declaration comes amid increased political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, with President Tinubu continuing to consolidate support across key blocs within the ruling APC. Read.. Full Details
