Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) led a high-level military delegation to Moscow for Russia’s 80th Victory Day celebration, marking the end of World War II. The event, held at the iconic Red Square, brought together more than 40 delegations from around the world, including 32 heads of government, in a show of international solidarity and respect for global wartime sacrifices.By OndoPress News Desk
The CDS participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, symbolizing Nigeria’s tribute to the heroes of WWII. He was accompanied by Major General U.A. Yusuf, Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps, and Brigadier General Obinna Azuikpe, Principal General Staff Officer to the CDS.
“This event reminds us of the high price paid for peace and the responsibility we all share to preserve it,” the CDS said during a brief exchange with reporters.
The Nigerian delegation’s presence underscored the country’s commitment to international peacekeeping, military diplomacy, and its historical connections with global powers in fostering post-war stability.
Victory Day is one of Russia’s most significant national holidays, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany. This year’s milestone celebration drew increased global attention amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
