In a decisive move to address the escalating conflict in Benue State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a set of strategic directives aimed at restoring peace and fostering unity among the warring communities.
Speaking during a town hall meeting in Yelewata on Friday, the President called for the formation of a Council of Elders, urging that all past governors of Benue State — including a former Governor of Nasarawa State — be incorporated into the peace process.
The President also directed Governor Hyacinth Alia to allocate land for ranching, describing it as a necessary step toward resolving recurring clashes between farmers and herders.
Addressing the citizens directly, Tinubu appealed for unity and cooperation, emphasizing that peace can only be achieved when all parties work together. He specifically urged traditional rulers to play an active role by aligning with government initiatives aimed at ending the violence.
In a message of encouragement to Governor Alia, Tinubu said:
> “Brace yourself for criticism — it is part and parcel of leadership. Carry your lantern, figuratively, and seek out fellow leaders. Together, you must find a solution.”
The President condemned the recent killings in the state, labeling them as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the region.
The directives come amid increasing pressure on the government to end the cycle of violence that has plagued Benue and surrounding areas for years.
