A total of 148 Nigerians stranded in Niger Republic have returned home through a coordinated repatriation exercise facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other stakeholders.
The returnees, who had been residing in Agadez, a known transit hub for irregular migration, arrived at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, at approximately 1:32 p.m.
Returnees Profiled and Accommodated in Kano
According to a statement issued by NEMA via its verified X handle on Saturday, the group included:
- 66 adult males
- 22 male children
- 37 adult females
- 23 female children
The returnees were received by NEMA’s Kano Operations Office and subsequently taken to Badala Hotel, where they underwent profiling and documentation on June 19, 2025 as part of reintegration procedures.
Part of Ongoing Migrant Reintegration Efforts
NEMA explained that the repatriation is part of ongoing efforts to support stranded Nigerian migrants and facilitate their reintegration into society.
“The repatriation was made possible through the collaboration between the IOM and relevant national stakeholders committed to providing humanitarian support and sustainable reintegration for returnees,” the agency stated.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader migration management strategy, which seeks to curb irregular migration while ensuring that returnees receive adequate psycho-social support, vocational training, and empowerment opportunities.
