Hardship Hits Harder As Cooking Gas Prices Rise Nationwide

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a fresh increase in the retail prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) across Nigeria in its latest “LPG Price Watch” for May 2025.

According to the report, The average price to refill a 5kg cylinder rose by 3.57% month-on-month, from N7,885.60 in April to N8,167.43 in May 2025. Year-on-year, this represents a 10.10% rise from N7,418.45 in May 2024.

The 12.5kg cylinder refill price climbed by 2.18% month-on-month, increasing from N20,268.06 in April to N20,709.11 in May 2025. Compared to May 2024 (N15,627.40), the 12.5kg refill price jumped by 32.52%.

State-by-State Breakdown For 5kg cylinders:

Highest prices were recorded in Abia (N9,181.20),

Ebonyi (N9,177.32), and Rivers (N9,174.40).

Lowest prices were seen in Oyo (N7,116.49), Niger (N7,142.07), and Plateau (N7,177.10).

For 12.5kg cylinders:

Delta State topped the list with N23,356.46, followed by Abia (N22,953.01) and Ebonyi (N22,943.30).

The lowest prices were recorded in Yobe (N18,500.00), Lagos (N18,536.00), and Kebbi (N18,606.60).

Zonal Analysis

The South-South zone recorded the highest 5kg refill average price at N8,760.51, followed by the South-East (N8,724.70), while the North-Central had the lowest at N7,759.38.

For 12.5kg refills, the South-South zone also led with an average of N22,026.26, followed by the South-East (N21,811.76), while the North-West recorded the lowest at N19,944.10.

April 2025 Recap

In April 5kg cylinder prices increased by 7.69% month-on-month, rising from N7,322.49 in March to N7,885.60 in April 2025, and up 20.92% year-on-year.

Rivers recorded the highest average price (N9,103.82), while Niger had the lowest (N7,006.15).

12.5kg cylinder prices rose by 9.82% from March (N18,456.24) to April (N20,268.06), and by 29.61% year-on-year.

Imo State had the highest average price at N22,938.73, with Delta and Rivers following closely.

Additional Insights

The NBS survey covered all 36 states and the FCT, involving over 700 field staff. Meanwhile, the headline inflation rate fell to 22.97% in May 2025, marking the second consecutive month of decline, down from 23.71% in April, and a 10.98% drop compared to May 2024’s 33.95%.
