The Presidency has disassociated itself from a series of campaign billboards promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections, describing the initiative as unauthorized and premature.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency expressed concern over the growing number of campaign-themed billboards surfacing in major Nigerian cities, particularly Abuja and Kano.
“The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima,” the statement read.
Some of the billboards reportedly feature images of President Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, raising speculation about a formal declaration ahead of the electoral timeline.
Onanuga clarified that neither the President nor the Vice President has authorized any campaign activity related to the 2027 elections. He emphasized that both leaders remain committed to their current mandate and respect Nigeria’s electoral laws.
“While President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters… the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land,” he said.
The Presidency warned that any form of premature campaigning could violate electoral laws and distort the democratic process. “Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages,” the statement continued.
Quoting the statement, Ondopress reports that President Tinubu will make his intentions known “when INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start.” Until then, no individual or group has been given the green light to launch any political promotion on his behalf.
The Presidency called for an immediate halt to the unauthorized campaign materials. “We urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign… to cease immediately,” Onanuga said.
According to the statement, the administration remains focused on its governance agenda, including economic revitalization, infrastructure development, human capital investment, and national security, Continue>>
