A light aircraft crash in the Klipgat area of Sofasonke claimed the lives of a pilot and a student pilot yesterday, Thursday, authorities confirmed.

The small plane, believed to be on a training or private flight, went down in the rural Klipgat area on Thursday evening. Emergency crews were alerted after the aircraft’s emergency locator beacon activated shortly before 6 p.m., triggering a search by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) and local first responders.

Upon arrival, rescue teams found both occupants a qualified pilot and a student who were declared dead at the scene, according to police and aviation sources.

This incident is the latest in a series of light aircraft accidents in South Africa in recent months, prompting renewed calls from aviation safety experts for a focus on training and maintenance standards in general aviation.
