EXPOSED: How Abacha’s SSS Director-General Peter Nwadua Was Arrested at Lagos Airport Trying to Flee Nigeria Over Multi-Million Naira Fraud
In a dramatic turn of events in 1999, Peter Nwadua, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) under the late military head of state General Sani Abacha, was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, while attempting to board a flight out of Nigeria.
According to P.M. News, Nwadua’s arrest came shortly after he was forced into retirement from the security agency he once headed.
The new SSS leadership under Albert Are reportedly uncovered alleged large-scale fraud and misappropriation of millions of naira linked to Nwadua and some associates.
The Allegations:
Diversion of PTF Funds: Nwadua was accused of diverting millions of naira provided by the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) , which was meant for staff welfare and facility improvements within the SSS. The funds disappeared, leaving agency infrastructure in deplorable condition.
Salary Scandal: He was alleged to have reduced a salary and welfare increase approved for SSS personnel by half, with the remaining funds unaccounted for.
This left staff morale at an all-time low, with several officers reportedly resigning during the period.See Full, Details. .
