Leave it to Larry David to walk into a room with a former president — and immediately claim the Oval Office.

During a panel at SXSW, David revealed the hilarious dynamic behind his upcoming HBO comedy series produced with former President Barack Obama. The show, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, is a sketch comedy romp through U.S. history timed to the country’s 250th anniversary.

But the real comedy apparently happened behind the scenes.

According to David, the collaboration with Obama was full of playful sparring. The former president reportedly spent time teasing David about everything from his golf game to how much sunscreen he wears.

And when Obama eventually offered notes on one of David’s sketches, things reached a classic Larry David standoff.

“Obama is also quite used to being the boss,” David explained. “We came to a bit of a loggerhead there.”

That’s when the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator delivered the line that stole the panel.

“I said, ‘I’m president here.’”

Yes — Larry David jokingly declared himself the president… to the actual former president of the United States.

The moment perfectly captured the spirit of the project, which the creators describe as essentially “Curb Your Enthusiasm in costumes,” with David bumbling his way through famous moments in American history. The series will also feature cameos from major stars. including Jon Hamm, Susie Essman, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and premieres June 26 on HBO.

Even David admits his partnership with Obama might surprise some people. “I know him,” David joked during the panel. “Don’t look down on him because of that.”

If the behind-the-scenes stories are any indication, the show could end up being one of the strangest — and funniest — presidential collaborations ever put on television.See moredetails. .
