Five Bang Life Sentences And Ten Years Imprisonment For Man Who Killed His Mother, Younger Sister And Grandmother In South Africa

Mzomhle Matakhiya (24), of Ngqayimbana locality, Siphaqeni A/A Section in the Eastern Cape, has been sentenced to five life sentences and ten years imprisonment by the Mthatha High Court, which sat in Port St Johns on Thursday.

Matakhiya was sentenced on charges of three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and malicious damage to property, which he committed on 23 June 2025.

According to police reports, on that day, Matakhiya stabbed his mother (40), his 20-year-old younger sister, and a 97-year-old woman, who was the grandmother of his mother’s boyfriend. All three were stabbed to death.

“His mother’s boyfriend and a neighbour were also stabbed but survived the ordeal. Mzomhle Matakhiya was arrested on the same day, and the murder weapon was recovered. He never received bail as Flagstaff detectives opposed it from the onset. His case was transferred to the Mthatha High Court, and he appeared for the first time at the High Court on 2 March 2026,” the statement reads.

Matakhiya was convicted on Tuesday and subsequently sentenced on Thursday to 10 years imprisonment for malicious damage to property, three life terms for murder, and two life sentences for attempted murder.
