Unlike women, who are born with a fixed number of eggs that age over time, men produce sperm continuously from puberty. However, sperm stored in the reproductive tract before ejaculation can deteriorate in quality.

The study analyzed data from 115 published studies involving nearly 55,000 men. It found that prolonged abstinence reduces sperm motility and viability, and increases DNA damage.

The main causes are oxidative stress, which physically harms sperm, and energy depletion, as sperm run out of fuel over time.

Current World Health Organization guidelines recommend abstaining for two to seven days before providing a sperm sample for fertility treatments.
