The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) says the rise in egg prices in Kano during Ramadan is largely driven by middlemen, not farmers.

A crate now sells for up to ₦8,500, up from ₦6,000–₦6,500, while single eggs go for ₦250–₦300.

PAN’s Kano chairman, Dr Usman Gwarzo, said farmers still sell at ₦4,300–₦5,500 per crate, blaming “mark-ups by middlemen, dealers and distributors.”

PAN President Muhammad Magaji Gettado said supply is under pressure from the high cost and shortage of day-old chicks, as well as heat stress and increased Ramadan demand.

Other factors include transport costs, limited supply, and weak regulation, allowing multiple mark-ups before eggs reach consumers.

In the South, including Ibadan and Lagos, prices range between ₦5,500 and ₦7,500.

With an estimated 28–31 million poor households in Nigeria, the price increase means higher food costs and reduced access to affordable protein for many families during Ramadan.

PAN says grain imports are easing feed costs slightly but warns prices may remain unstable.See more, details. .
