The victim, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, fled Ukraine in search of safety and a new beginning in the United States. However, her life was cut short when she was attacked on the Charlotte light rail by 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., a career criminal with a history of repeated prison sentences spanning 15 years.
Zarutska was stabbed in the throat during the unprovoked assault. Emergency responders rushed her to the hospital, but she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
