Nigeria, Other African Nations Set to Witness Rare Lunar Eclipse

According to astronomers, the eclipse is expected to last for about 83 minutes, beginning around 8:00 PM Nigerian time, and will be visible in varying phases across the continent.

Where It Will Be Visible

The eclipse will be observable across most parts of Africa, with some regions witnessing the full sequence from start to finish. Countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe are all expected to view the phenomenon.

However, experts note that westernmost areas may miss parts of the penumbral or partial phases since the Moon will be rising closer to or during totality.

What Happens During a Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly in space, with Earth positioned in the middle. This alignment causes the Earth to cast its shadow on the Moon, often giving it a reddish hue a phenomenon popularly known as a “blood moon.”

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Scientists emphasize that no protective equipment, such as eclipse glasses, is required.
