The Department of State Services (DSS) has petitioned Meta, the parent company of Facebook, calling for the immediate suspension and deactivation of the Facebook account of activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over what it described as “misleading information, hate speech, and content capable of inciting violence” against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and..  Read . .More —

In a letter dated 7th September, 2025, and addressed to Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, USA, the DSS accused Sowore of using his Facebook page to “disparage, ridicule, and deliberately malign” the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The security agency specifically cited a 26th August, 2025 post, where Sowore allegedly referred to President Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of lying about corruption under his administration. The DSS said the post had continued to circulate widely, sparking tensions online and offline, thereby threatening national security.

The letter, signed by Uwem Davies for the Director General of the DSS, demanded that Meta take down Sowore’s Facebook account and all related content within 24 hours, warning that failure to act could attract “far-reaching and sweeping measures” from the Nigerian government.

Meanwhile, Sowore, in a reaction shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter) earlier today, accused the DSS of idleness and incompetence, saying the agency was more concerned with protecting President Tinubu’s image than tackling the rising insecurity in the country.
