Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has said that the removal of petrol subsidies by the federal government was influenced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, Falana faulted the government’s policy direction, insisting that no country in the world has completely scrapped subsidies.

“The World Bank and IMF pressured the Nigerian government into removing fuel subsidies. But the truth is, no nation has entirely done away with subsidies,” Falana argued.

His comments add to the growing debate over the impact of the subsidy removal on Nigerians, particularly as the cost of living continues to rise.

The remarks were also highlighted by broadcast journalist Oseni Rufai, who shared excerpts of Falana’s position on his X (formerly Twitter) page.
