No fewer than 17 persons died and two others still missing after a commercial bus plunged into a river in Gummi local government area of Zamfara state.
The deceased were said to be on their way to a wedding ceremony when the incident occurred.
The victims hailed from different communities in Zamfara and Kebbi states, and were conveying the bride to Sakaba village in Wasagu local government area when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Blueprint gathered that the victims embarked on the journey after the wedding Fatiha on Sunday when the incident occurred.
The bride and the driver reportedly survived the accident.
According to a statement by Isa Aliyu, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Zamfara state Command, the accident occurred when the overloaded bus attempted to cross a bridge that had collapsed earlier in the week.
“Residents had been using sandbags to create a makeshift passage across the weakened bridge,” the statement said.
While condoling with the bereaved families, the FRSC Sector Commander Aliyu Ma’aji cautioned motorists against overloading, urging them to always seek information on road conditions before beginning their journeys.
He also lauded the effort of the locals who worked assiduously to rescue some of the passengers.
Abbas mourns
Mourning the death of the travellers, Speaker House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen lamented the accident, describing it as unfortunate, considering the many lives lost.
He also sympathised with the new couple who may have been traumatised by the incident.
Abbas also commiserated with families of the victims and their respective communities while extending his condolences to the people and government of both Kebbi and Zamfara states, as he prayed to Allah (SWT) to grant them Jannatul Firdaus.
40 worshippers abducted
In a related development, not less than 40 worshippers were abducted Monday during dawn prayers in Gidan Turbe village of Tsafe local government area, also of Zamfara state.
The bandits stormed the village in large numbers with sophisticated weapons.
The attack was coming barely 24 hours after a peace deal with bandits operating between Katsina and Zamfara states.
A resident, Malam Jamilu Lawal Tsafe, told Blueprint via the telephone last night that the terrorists surrounded the mosque at about 5:30 am when the worshipers were observing the early morning prayers.
However, Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism expert on the Lake Chad, stated that bandits surrounded the worshippers at gunpoint, forcing dozens of them out of the mosque before chasing them into the forest.
The victims were reportedly moved towards the Gohori axis in Tsafe, a notorious hideout for criminal groups under the leadership of Adamu Aleru.
