Again, Flooding Hits Anambra, 15 Communities Submerged

In Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, floodwaters have overtaken all but one of the sixteen communities, occurring just a day after the federal government warned of this year’s impending floods.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had previously issued a notice highlighting the states at risk, urging residents in coastal regions to begin relocating.

The recent flooding resulted from heavy rainfall that caused the River Niger to overflow, inundating homes and farmland.

Meanwhile, communities like Okpoko have begun early harvests to salvage their crops from rising waters. In response, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has set up emergency centers in the most vulnerable areas and advised residents in flood-prone riverine communities—specifically Ogbaru, Anambra East, and Anambra West—to relocate to higher ground for safety.

Governor Charles Soludo, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, is collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and federal authorities to intensify flood management efforts.

Ibezim, who chairs the Flood Management Committee, stated that the existing emergency camps are being improved, with local government leaders actively working to minimize the impact.

But some of the villagers who spoke with newsmen lamented that they are yet to take delivery of any relief materials from government or any other agencies.

“The entire 15 out of the 16 communities have been affected by the flooding and no one has come here to see us or may be they are on their way to Ogbaru” the villagers stated.
