South Africa News: Charges Against Crime Intelligence Boss Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele Withdrawn
South Africa’s Crime Intelligence boss, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, and Brigadier Dineo Mokwele are no longer facing the fraud and corruption charges previously brought against them.
The charges against Khumalo, Mokwele and their co-accused have reportedly been formally withdrawn, bringing an end to a case that had generated considerable attention within South Africa’s law-enforcement and political circles.
The group was arrested in June last year over allegations relating to the irregular appointment of Mokwele.
The case subsequently came under increased scrutiny following testimony before the Madlanga Commission by former Independent Directorate Against Corruption head Andrea Johnson.
Evidence presented to the commission reportedly raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the arrests and allegations that the case formed part of an attempt to remove senior police officials from their positions.
Khumalo, Mokwele and the other accused have consistently denied wrongdoing.
The matter also became linked to a controversial press conference held by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July last year.
During the briefing, Mkhwanazi made serious allegations concerning interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, adding to the wider controversy surrounding the case.
With the charges now withdrawn, the prosecution against Khumalo, Mokwele and their co-accused has formally come to an end, although the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the wider allegations remain matters of public interest.
The development is likely to attract further attention as South Africa continues to examine allegations of interference, corruption and internal disputes within its law-enforcement institutions.
