The Nigerian Army has recovered the remains of two personnel who were killed in 2022 while travelling to Imo State for their traditional wedding.

The victims, Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were reportedly abducted and murdered by suspected IPOB/ESN elements along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of the state.

The couple had been on their way to Gloria’s hometown for what was meant to be a joyful union of their families. Linus, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, and Gloria, who was still in active service, were said to share a strong bond built on love, discipline, and years of sacrifice despite living in different parts of the country.

Their killing sparked outrage at the time, adding to growing concerns over insecurity in the South-East.

After nearly four years of search efforts, troops of the 82 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, carried out a clearance operation on April 24, 2026, in the area where the incident occurred.

Security sources said the troops came under heavy attack during the operation but successfully repelled the assailants and continued the mission. The team later discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
