A 44-year-old woman, Blessing Okolie, has dead following fibroid surgery at a private hospital in the Abule Egba area of Lagos, with her family alleging medical negligence.

According to her sister, Blessing had long battled a severe fibroid that made her “look pregnant” and affected her marriage. Determined to improve her condition, she opted for surgery at a privately recommended facility despite concerns about its standard.

She underwent the procedure on March 28, 2026, but her family claimed her condition worsened days later. “She complained of pain… her stomach started swelling,” her sister said, adding that repeated requests for a scan were ignored as doctors insisted “there was no problem.”

The situation escalated when a scan was eventually carried out at an external lab, which allegedly revealed “a metal… inside her stomach.” A second surgery was performed to remove the object, but her condition did not improve.

“She was still very weak… I begged them to refer us, but they kept saying she would be fine,” she said. The family later moved her to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where she died despite efforts to save her.

The hospital’s medical director confirmed the surgery and said complications arose from “sepsis… after the surgery,” urging the public to await autopsy results. “There are half-truths and falsehoods… we should wait for the coroner’s inquest,” he stated.
