No-Nonsense NAHCON Chairman Rejects Substandard Meals Served to Pilgrims
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reaffirmed its commitment to pilgrims’ welfare and food safety after rejecting some meals served to Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia over alleged violations of health and packaging regulations.
In a statement issued by the commission’s management, NAHCON disclosed that Saudi health authorities had continued to enforce strict food safety standards during the ongoing Hajj operations, particularly due to prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom.
The commission explained that some dinner meals served on Tuesday night, May 27, 2026, failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards and were immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi officials.
To cushion the impact on affected pilgrims, the service support company reportedly provided alternative light refreshments, while members of the NAHCON board moved round to brief state officials and managers on the development.
Demonstrating a hardline stance on pilgrims’ welfare, the Chairman of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, directed the commission’s security committee to investigate the caterers involved and those who facilitated the contracts.
The chairman also ordered a separate investigation into some tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than they officially registered and allegedly exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims during the Hajj exercise.
According to the commission, any operator found culpable at the end of investigations would face sanctions, including withdrawal of operating licences.
NAHCON further disclosed that arrangements had already commenced for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the meal incident.
The commission appreciated the understanding of the pilgrims and assured them of its continued commitment to their welfare and safety throughout the Hajj period.
“NAHCON appreciates the understanding of the pilgrims and reassures all of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise,” the statement added.
