Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has shared the inspiring story of a young graduate who turned to selling akara after failing to secure a job, revealing that quiet intervention transformed his small business into one that now employs 12 people.

Speaking on the importance of supporting small businesses and vulnerable Nigerians, the First Lady said the graduate had started selling akara in Abuja because he could not find employment.

“There was once I read an article about a young graduate who said he didn’t get a job. And he said he sells akara because he couldn’t get a job, and he’s in Abuja,” she recalled.

According to her, she ensured the young entrepreneur received support without making her involvement public.

“We approached him, but I didn’t put my name to it. We equipped him more. He now has 12 workers working under him, and he’s doing very, very well,” she said.

Using the story as an example, Tinubu urged wealthy Nigerians, especially successful entertainers, to use their resources to uplift struggling citizens and reduce the burden on government.

She specifically called on international music stars and Nigerian celebrities to establish charitable foundations that can support the less privileged.

“I will use Akon, a music icon, who does a lot of great charity work. Then the Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money.”

While acknowledging the rewards of success, she said luxury should not replace compassion.

“Good cars are good. A Maybach is good, Rolls-Royce is good, but still, you can still help. The burden on the government is huge. You can still help.”
Highlighting the dignity of small businesses, she added, “There are pepper sellers, there are vegetable sellers, there are okra sellers, melon sellers, akara, kuli-kuli. Akara is delicious. I can tell you that.”
