Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has risen to 137,371,080 registered Nigerians as of August 2026, marking a major expansion of the country’s national identity system as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intensifies efforts to achieve universal identity coverage by the end of the year.

The latest milestone, confirmed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), represents a significant increase from 94.03 million registrations recorded in 2022 and 104.16 million by December 2023.

The expansion has been driven by wider NIN-SIM integration, digital identity reforms, cross-agency data integration and the Federal Government’s directive for NIMC to enrol all Nigerians into the national identity database.
