The Cross River State government says it has identified and isolated 10 individuals who had contact with a Chinese national recently linked to a renewed COVID-19 case in Nigeria.

According to the state epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, who spoke with Daily Trust, the individuals were traced and placed under monitoring following contact tracing efforts by health officials. She explained that the team also visited the Chinese national’s workplace in Akamkpa Local Government Area as part of the investigation.

She added that the Chinese national is currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) and is responding positively.

“We’ve restricted their movements to their homes, so that they do not spread the symptoms to other persons.”

Ekpenyong further urged residents to remain cautious, stressing that COVID-19, which emerged six years ago, has not been completely eradicated. She advised the public to consistently wash and sanitise their hands, wear face masks, and follow all recommended health guidelines.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, confirmed the return of COVID-19 in the state, noting that public health systems had been activated to contain any spread. He reassured residents that there was no need for panic.

“COVID-19 is not peculiar to Nigeria. But we’re determined to contain it. There’s no cause for alarm,” he said.
