Gauteng Police and Brand Protectors Seize Suspected Counterfeit Goods Worth R371,700 After Inspecting 13 Shops During Marabastad Crackdown
The Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit has intensified its crackdown on counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods, leading to the seizure of suspected counterfeit products valued at R371,700 during a targeted operation in Marabastad, Pretoria.
The operation formed part of ongoing enforcement efforts to combat the manufacture, distribution and sale of illegal goods across the province.
The operation was carried out on Thursday, 9 July 2026, in the Tshwane District by the Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit working in partnership with brand protectors.
A joint task team inspected 13 shops in the Marabastad area as part of the province’s continued efforts to enforce legislation against counterfeit and illicit trade.
During the inspections, officials seized a variety of goods suspected of contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act, 1997 (Act No. 37 of 1997).
The confiscated items included suspected counterfeit accessories and consumable products bearing trademarks allegedly used without the authorisation of the registered trademark owners. The estimated value of the seized goods is R371,700.
The operation forms part of Gauteng police’s ongoing campaign to curb the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods throughout the province.
Authorities said the Provincial Counterfeit Unit will continue working with brand protectors in similar enforcement operations targeting businesses suspected of trading in counterfeit products.
