A major security breach unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after a gunman assembled a “long” weapon inside a lightly monitored area near the terrace-level entrance of the Washington Hilton.

According to a volunteer witness, the room had bar carts being stored and “no security” at the time of the assembly.

Witness Helen Mabus described the gun as not looking like a typical firearm, noting it was put together from a bag.

The gunman then rushed toward the stairs leading down to the ballroom and opened fire in multiple directions. Witnesses estimated at least ten shots were fired.

A law enforcement officer was struck, hit in the vest, with his condition currently unclear.
