JUST-IN: USA Lifts Immigration Ban on Visas for Nigerian Doctors to address physician Scarcity

The United States has reversed its policy that suspended visa processing for foreign-trained doctors, reopening opportunities for physicians from Nigeria and about 38 other countries to continue their applications.

According to a report by The New York Times, the restriction, introduced in January, had paused decisions on visa extensions, work permits, and green cards for citizens affected by the U.S. travel ban system.

The freeze left many doctors in limbo, with some placed on administrative leave and others facing the risk of losing their jobs due to stalled approvals.

However, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has now updated its guidelines, exempting medical doctors from the suspension and allowing their applications to proceed.

Confirming the development, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said, “Applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing.”

The decision comes as the U.S. grapples with a deepening healthcare staffing crisis. Authorities estimate a shortage of about 65,000 doctors, a figure projected to rise in the coming years.
