2026 FIFA: Ghana Midfielder Thomas Partey Refused Entry to Canada for World Cup Opener
Ondopress.com Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has been refused entry to Canada, where his team is set to play Panama in their 2026 World Cup opener on June 18.
FIFA confirmed that Partey’s visa application “has been refused by the Canadian government.” Partey, who faces multiple rape and sexual assault charges, is on bail and denies all allegations.
He was admitted to the United States on June 3 and is eligible to play in Ghana’s second group match against England in Boston on June 23.
Partey’s absence weakens Ghana’s midfield for a crucial opening match against Panama.
Canada’s visa refusal may set a precedent for how other host nations handle players with pending criminal charges.
The decision could affect team morale and preparation with just days before the tournament opener.
Partey remains available for matches in the US, where different immigration rules apply.
Legal proceedings (trial set for June 2027) will continue to shadow his international career.
Ghana will face Panama without Partey, but he may rejoin the squad for their England clash, pending any further immigration developments.
