BREAKING: NDLEA Warns Parents As Cannabis-Infused Cookies And Gummies Enter Nigeria
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned parents to pay closer attention to the cookies and gummies their children consume, following the interception of cann@bis-infused products being smuggled into Nigeria.
In a statement shared on Sunday, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, urged parents to be more observant, particularly if their children frequently crave cookies and gummies.
“As parents, if your kids and young ones always crave for cookies and gummies, you may have to pay a little more attention. There may be more to it than ordinary cookies and gummies,” Babafemi said while sharing images of the seized products.
The warning followed a major interception by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, where officers discovered two 40-foot containers containing large quantities of cannabis-infused products concealed among legitimate imports, including used vehicles, generators, batteries and fabrics.
The seized consignment included thousands of Delta-8 cannabis pre-roll cookies, cannabis-infused gummies and other cannabis cookies. The products, which originated from the United States, had an estimated street value of about ₦373.8 million.
The items were subsequently handed over to the NDLEA.
According to the agency, the products were packaged in colourful pouches and marketed with appealing flavours, including Hawaiian Rain Pineapple Guava and Thai Mango. Some were also labelled as vegan and hemp-derived.
NDLEA officials described the products as an emerging public health concern, noting that their attractive appearance and packaging could make them particularly appealing to children, students and other young people.
The agency therefore urged parents to exercise greater caution and monitor the snacks and confectionery products being consumed by their children.
