Health Benefits of Pumpkin Leaves You Should Know
Pumpkin leaves may not always receive as much attention as the pumpkin itself, but they are a nutritious part of the plant that can be included in everyday meals. Known as ugu in Nigeria, pumpkin leaves are commonly used in soups, stews and vegetable dishes.
Beyond their familiar taste, pumpkin leaves contain several nutrients that can support overall health when included as part of a balanced diet.
Rich in nutrients
Pumpkin leaves contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that the body needs to function properly. They provide nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron and potassium. The exact nutritional content can vary depending on how the leaves are grown, prepared and cooked.
Supports healthy vision
Pumpkin leaves contain vitamin A and carotenoids, nutrients associated with maintaining normal vision. Vitamin A is particularly important for the health of the eyes and helps the body maintain normal vision, especially in low light.
Adding leafy vegetables such as pumpkin leaves to your diet can therefore contribute to your overall intake of eye-supporting nutrients.
May support the immune system
Vitamin C is involved in the normal functioning of the immune system and also helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Pumpkin leaves can contribute to your daily intake of vitamin C, particularly when prepared in ways that minimise nutrient loss.
However, no single food can prevent illness. A varied diet containing different fruits and vegetables is important for supporting general health.
Provides iron
Iron is essential for making haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that helps transport oxygen around the body. Pumpkin leaves contain some iron and can form part of a varied diet that supplies this important mineral.
For people who rely heavily on plant foods for iron, eating a variety of iron-containing foods is useful. Combining plant sources of iron with foods rich in vitamin C may also help the body absorb more of the iron.
Supports bone health
Pumpkin leaves provide calcium, a mineral needed for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. They also contain other nutrients that contribute to normal body functions.
Including different leafy vegetables in your meals can therefore be one way of contributing to a balanced diet that supports bone health.
May support heart health
Pumpkin leaves contain potassium, a mineral that plays a role in maintaining normal blood pressure and proper muscle and nerve function. They are also naturally low in fat when prepared without excessive amounts of oil.
Eating more vegetables as part of a balanced diet can support overall heart health. How the leaves are prepared also matters, as adding large amounts of salt, oil or processed ingredients can change the nutritional value of the meal.
Contains antioxidants
Pumpkin leaves contain plant compounds with antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
A diet rich in different coloured vegetables and fruits provides a variety of plant compounds, so pumpkin leaves are best enjoyed alongside other vegetables rather than treated as a single source of antioxidants.
May support healthy digestion
As a leafy vegetable, pumpkin leaves can contribute fibre to the diet. Fibre is important for normal digestion and can help support regular bowel movements.
Drinking enough water and eating a variety of fibre-containing foods, including vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains, can further support digestive health.
Pumpkin leaves can be washed thoroughly and added to soups, stews and other vegetable dishes. They can also be cooked with ingredients such as tomatoes, onions, peppers, beans and fish.
Avoid overcooking leafy vegetables unnecessarily, as prolonged cooking can reduce some heat-sensitive nutrients. Washing the leaves properly before preparation is also important.
