Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, has reacted sharply to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following his recent comments on opposition figures Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, as well as his stance on political leadership in Nigeria.

Onanuga, in a statement on Tuesday, described El-Rufai’s position as contradictory, recalling that the former governor once admitted that “four years is not enough for a political office holder to make meaningful changes.”

He questioned why El-Rufai, despite making this admission, has joined forces with politicians he described as “power-hungry desperados” allegedly plotting to unseat President Bola Tinubu just two years into his administration.

Contrasting Tinubu’s record with what he termed the “underachievement” of some former governors in Anambra, Rivers, and Kaduna, Onanuga listed what he called significant milestones of the current administration:

  1. Nigeria’s foreign reserves are at their highest level in 44 months.
  2. The All-Share Index (ASI) has risen from 53,000 to over 140,000 points, creating more than ₦26 trillion in market wealth.
  3. The exchange rate has been harmonised, ending arbitrage opportunities.
  4. Inflation has declined for four consecutive months.
  5. The GDP has expanded by ₦103.5 trillion in two years.
  6. Nigeria records balance of payments surplus quarterly.

Onanuga also highlighted the administration’s social policies, including the NELFUND student loan scheme, direct cash transfers to vulnerable Nigerians, and improved federal allocations to states and local governments, which he said have boosted job creation and capital projects nationwide.
