To Those who are here legally, respect Us as South Africans, Respect Our Laws and Traditions— Pres Ramaphosa Says Amid Rising Tensions
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged Nigerians and other foreign nationals to obey local laws and customs, stressing mutual respect. “To those who are here legally, respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, respect our conventions and our traditions, as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country,” he said during a Freedom Day address on SABC News.
His remarks come amid renewed anti-foreigner tensions and reported vi%lence in areas including Durban, Cape Town, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. While reaffirming commitment to human rights and global cooperation, Ramaphosa said authorities would enforce immigration laws, adding, “Let us allow our laws to take their course… we will be able to deal with those who are in our country illegally.”
He also underscored the importance of global legal frameworks, stating, “International law… is a shield for all countries,” and noted that true multilateralism requires respect for sovereignty, accountability, and peaceful coexistence.
Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, sought to calm fears, saying, “Right now Nigerians are not under siege… the situation is under control.” He dismissed viral videos of har+ssment, adding, “Those people… don’t represent the entire South African community.”
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission advised citizens to avoid confrontations and remain law-abiding, noting that authorities from both countries are working to ensure safety.read news full, details. .
